When is JPG the right image format?
JPG (JPEG) is a lossy photo format with extremely broad support across browsers, phones, office software, upload forms, messaging apps, and older image workflows.
JPG is usually a strong choice for photographs when transparency is not needed. Repeated JPG re-encoding can reduce image quality, so keep the original file when future editing matters.
For graphics that need transparency or lossless decoded pixels, PNG is often a better fit. For modern web delivery, WebP can provide smaller files in many cases.

Yes. JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format; the different extensions come from historical filename conventions.
Does JPG support transparency?
No. JPG does not have an alpha transparency channel. Transparent pixels need to be flattened onto a background when converting to JPG.
