Photoshop HEIC compatibility

Photoshop Can't Open HEIC? Fix It or Convert to PNG

If Adobe Photoshop does not recognize a .heic file, the fix depends on your operating system and the file's encoding. On Windows, Adobe instructs users to install both Microsoft's HEIF and HEVC extensions. On a supported Mac, check Photoshop and macOS compatibility. If you need an editable raster copy now, convert a supported HEIC still image to PNG and use Photoshop's File > Open.

Fast workaround:

Convert the original with HEIC to PNG converter, download a real PNG, then choose File > Open in Photoshop. Do not simply rename the .heic extension; and keep the original for high-dynamic-range, metadata and color-critical work.

Why Photoshop might reject a HEIC photo

Adobe documents HEIF/HEIC support, but successful opening depends on operating system support, installed components, Photoshop and the image codec. The messages “Additional non Adobe software is needed to open .heic files” and “Photoshop cannot recognize the file extension” can occur on Windows when the necessary components are missing. An individual damaged or unsupported photo can also fail, even if other .heic files open.

Windows: install the two Microsoft extensions Photoshop requires

Adobe's current Windows instructions specify both HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions from Microsoft. Having only the HEIF extension may not be sufficient for typical HEVC-encoded HEIC photos; some editions or managed devices may restrict Microsoft Store installation. Follow your organization's policy and check whether the official HEVC extension has a charge.

  1. Close Photoshop before installing the extensions.
  2. Open the Microsoft Store and install HEIF Image Extensions from Microsoft.
  3. Install HEVC Video Extensions from Microsoft, following the Store's current availability and licensing prompts.
  4. Restart Photoshop and choose File > Open to select the original HEIC. If it still fails, test a different known-good iPhone HEIC before blaming the editor.

Adobe's official instructions: Install Windows HEIF and HEVC codecs for Photoshop. For general Windows/Photos/Paint behavior beyond Photoshop, see the Windows HEIC to PNG guide. FileOnTap's browser converter itself does not require the Windows extensions.

Mac: check supported HEIC import and the source file

Adobe documents HEIF/HEIC support on macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later in its Photoshop format guidance; that describes a compatibility baseline, not a promise that every older Photoshop version or every HEIF variant will open. Use a supported, updated macOS and Photoshop combination. Choose File > Open and browse to the actual HEIC file. If Photoshop will not open it, try macOS Preview to see whether the system can decode the same original. If Preview opens it, you can use File > Export > PNG where available, or use the browser converter for a compatible copy.

If another editor opens a file but Photoshop does not, compare the version of Photoshop and the file's encoding rather than repeatedly changing filename extensions. See Mac HEIC to PNG guide and Adobe: supported image formats and HEIC caveats.

No HEIC codec or store access? Convert to PNG before opening Photoshop

If you cannot install a Microsoft Store extension on a work PC, or Photoshop still cannot import a supported iPhone HEIC, make a PNG working copy in your browser. This route does not add Photoshop's native HEIC support; it changes the input to a commonly supported raster format.

  1. Keep a backup of the original HEIC image. Open the HEIC to PNG converter in a browser on Windows, Mac or Chromebook.
  2. Select the original .heic or .heif still file. FileOnTap converts supported files in-browser, one at a time, for batches of up to 10.
  3. Download the converted PNG, or download successful results as a ZIP and extract the PNG you need.
  4. In Photoshop choose File > Open, locate the actual .png file and confirm its dimensions and colors before editing.
  5. Save your editable layered work as PSD or PSB when appropriate; exporting a PNG alone is not a replacement for a layered Photoshop document.

File does not appear in Photoshop's Open dialog

Adobe says you can choose File > Open, navigate to the image and use the format filter (Files of Type on Windows or Enable on macOS) to show the relevant files if necessary. Avoid renaming an actual .heic file to .png: the bytes remain HEIC. If a genuine PNG does not appear, confirm the download or ZIP extraction finished and check the extension and path.

HEIC variants Photoshop and browser converters may not support

Adobe explicitly notes that Canon HIF/HEIC files are not supported in its described Photoshop HEIF workflow; it recommends using compatible camera raw files instead. FileOnTap also supports only the subset of .heic/.heif still images its decoder can process. An extension alone does not guarantee an HEVC still image; a corrupt or specialized multi-image/auxiliary HEIF file may fail. Do not assume the HEIC-to-PNG route can repair unsupported originals.

What can change when Photoshop opens a converted PNG?

  • Photo detail: PNG output is losslessly encoded from decoded pixels, but cannot recreate details already lost by the HEIC source.
  • Color and HDR: Color interpretation, output bit depth, embedded profiles and HDR appearance may differ. Examine the result in a color-managed workflow before production use.
  • Metadata: EXIF, camera depth data, Apple-specific photo information and the video part of Live Photos may not be preserved.
  • File size: PNG copies can be much larger than the HEIC original. There is no guaranteed compression ratio.
  • Transparency: A photo does not gain a transparent background just because it was saved as PNG.
  • Layered edits: Open a PNG for editing in Photoshop and use PSD/PSB to retain layers and editable work where needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does Photoshop support HEIC on Windows 11? Adobe documents HEIC support for Windows with both HEIF and HEVC extensions installed. Actual results depend on your Windows, Photoshop and source-file compatibility.

Can I edit a converted HEIC PNG in Photoshop? Yes, Photoshop supports PNG; open the generated file as a raster image. This does not import the original HEIC metadata or extra photo features by default.

Is PNG always better than HEIC for Photoshop? No. A PNG copy is a compatibility workaround. Retain HEIC as an original and use an appropriate raw or high-bit-depth workflow when color, HDR or capture metadata matters.
